Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever a binding element holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the management had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio became as messy during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Return

One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
